.Stuart, J.E.B.

Confederate General, signed endorsement as Major General April 22, 1863, also signed by Brig. General Fitzhugh Lee and Col. William C. Wickham. Wickum has written a brief summary of the request and signed it, followed by concurring endorsements from Lee and Stuart. Stuart writes “Hd. Quar. Cav. Division/ 22 –April 1863/ approved & _____ forwarded./ J.E.B. Stuart Major General” The request had something to do with a British subject who revealed his nationality once his initial term of service ended. He then appears to have requested payment or a chance to continue serving. Two narrow adjoining margins have been professionally reinforced. General soiling and spotting but overall good condition. Stuart’s rare signature is strong but there is a small nick at the margin that touches the “J” or “Major”. An interesting example of a foreign soldier fighting for the Confederacy. J.E.B. Stuart is tough to find and this of course was signed just six weeks before Gettysburg.
