takes a stand on Gay Rights
Clark, Tom

Tom Clark – Supreme Court Justice, Attorney General. A handwritten letter as a retired Justice on both sides of an engraved Supreme Court card. Responding to a question on his opinion about controversial matters at the time Clark writes that he supports the Equal Rights Amendments and “2. Homosexuality ipso facto should not be a bar to employment.” He also prefaced his opinions by making it very clear that is not involved with and deliberations and does not speak for the Court. This was likely written in the early ‘70’s. His opinion on the ERA would not have been particularly controversial but it is an early stand in favor of Gay Rights. Letters from Justices—active or retired- on controversial matters are quite hard to find. This one referencing Gay Rights is particularly nice. [#4423]
